Today we spent the morning at Hampton Court! I loved it! I wanted to dress up in a fancy gown and be a lady at court. It was a beautiful! I actually stood in the Palace of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Katherine Howard, and Katherine of Aragon, King William III and Queen Mary! The Palace had a staff of actors dressed in period costumes who reenacted different events surrounding the marriage of Henry VIII to Katherine Howard. I took notes but was in too much awe of the Palace. I hope all my notes below are accurate! I have a whole album on facebook, check it out!
The Hampton Court Palace was a huge Palace of ultimate Palimpsest. 13 monarchs and one Dictator occupied it. They all loved the palace with the exception of Queen Victoria who decided the palace did not suit her but she did take some of the furniture with her from the Palace. At any given time the court would be filled with 1500 courtiers.
Henry VIII fell in love with the palace and took over when he saw it around 1529. The Palace Gardens came to be when William of Orange came to Hampton Court Palace and James I put in the maze. William III came to the Palace in 1688 when he took over for James II. William married Mary, the daughter of James and they jointly ruled. Christopher Wren and many other famous designers redesigned the palace at Williams request. Queen Elizabeth invited Shakespeare’s Company to perform.
